Guided vs Self-Guided W Trek: Which One Fits Your Trip?
You can organize the W independently when park rules permit, or book a package. Compare guide coverage, accommodation and transport: the W Trek Express includes a guide on day one only; the 5-day camping trek is the fully guided option. The 3-day hotel-based program is sightseeing and does not hike the W. Check current park restrictions before choosing dates.
What self-guided actually involves
The W can be hiked independently in the summer season, but independent does not mean improvised. Booking accommodation along the route is mandatory: the park's official reservation page names two authorised operators — Las Torres Patagonia for the eastern sector (Central, Chileno, Cuernos, Francés) and Vértice Patagonia for the west (Paine Grande, Grey). Wild camping is prohibited, so no confirmed beds or tent pitches means no trek.
The bookings are the real work. You deal with two separate companies, two booking systems, and cancellation terms that bite: Las Torres Patagonia's published policy charges 20% from 89 days out, 50% from 69 days, and 100% at 44 days or less, with no-shows charged in full. On top of that come the park pass — bought on pasesparques.cl at least 24 hours before entry — the Pudeto–Paine Grande catamaran, and the bus between Puerto Natales and the park.
We deliberately don't quote refugio and campsite prices here, because they vary by season and room type. Check them directly on the official Las Torres Patagonia and Vértice Patagonia websites before you commit to dates.
What a guided program covers
The W Trek Express and the 5-day camping trek are the W options in this catalog. The Express includes guiding on day one only. The camping trek lists camps, with tent, sleeping bag and mat as optional items; confirm the exact overnight arrangements. The 3-Day Guided Experience is a hotel-based sightseeing alternative, not a shorter W.

The honest cost picture
Self-guided is cheaper, and the more you camp the cheaper it gets. The one fixed cost is the park pass: CLP 48,500 for foreign adults aged 18–59 on the multi-day pass, valid for up to 10 consecutive days under the official 2026 tariff — enough to cover the whole W. Everything else depends on how you sleep: camping is the budget route, while full-board refugio nights add up quickly.
The existing listed starting prices distinguish different trips: €730 for the 3-day sightseeing program; €1,034 for the 5-day W Express; €1,642 for the 5-day camping trek (checked August 2026). Wind, daylight and judgement calls
Patagonian weather is the variable no option removes. The park's own advice is blunt: the climate changes rapidly, and you should carry layers for rain, wind and snow in any month. Chile's meteorological service (DMC) has recorded 10-minute average winds of 74 km/h at its Puerto Natales station — and that is a sustained average, not a gust.
Self-guided hikers make their own calls on conditions, and the park rules are strict: register at every ranger station, stay on marked trails, and never walk without daylight. Summer helps — around 16 and a half hours of daylight at the December solstice at this latitude, against roughly 8 in late June. On a guided program those judgement calls sit with someone who is accountable for the group and can rework the day around conditions.
Winter is not a choice: guides are mandatory

2026 shows how far this goes: the park announced a temporary closure of the W trail from 1 June to 31 July 2026, with only Base Torres open and only with accredited guides, and the O circuit closed until 31 October 2026. So which one — and where do you sleep before and after?
Book a guided program if your dates are fixed, your time in Chile is short, or you are trekking between May and September. Go self-guided if you are travelling in the summer season, enjoy running your own logistics, and can commit to refugio dates well ahead — the cancellation penalties make late changes expensive.

The honest downsides
A guided program can cost several times a camping-based self-guided W — in summer you are paying a premium for logistics you could handle yourself.
Departures run on fixed dates and a fixed itinerary; if the weather closes in on your Base of the Towers day, the program moves on regardless.
You hike at the group's pace, and the accommodation standard is the operator's choice — some programs mix shared rooms and camping nights.
Operators' listings differ on what is included — one lists park entrance fees, another does not — so read each one carefully before comparing prices.
