Puerto Natales vs El Calafate: Which Base for Torres del Paine?

If Torres del Paine is the point of your trip, base yourself in Puerto Natales — most of the tours we compare depart from there, and day trips get you into the park and back the same evening. El Calafate only makes sense when Perito Moreno anchors your itinerary and Torres del Paine is a single add-on day: the cross-border tour is listed by its operator at 16 hours, passport required. Here is the full comparison, including what that border day actually involves.

What each town actually offers

Puerto Natales is the Chilean gateway town to Torres del Paine, and nearly the entire tour menu starts here: panoramic full-day tours from €65 (checked August 2026), the Base of the Towers day hike from €86 (checked August 2026), boat trips to Grey Glacier and to the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers, puma-watching expeditions, and every multi-day W trek — guided W programs start from €1,034 (checked August 2026). Operators pick up at hotels in town, usually early in the morning, and the full-day tours themselves are listed at 12 to 15 hours.

El Calafate sits across the border in Argentina and is the base for Los Glaciares National Park and the Perito Moreno glacier. Our catalogue lists a cross-border full-day Torres del Paine tour from €180 (checked August 2026). Everything else — the hikes, the boats, the treks — requires relocating to Puerto Natales.

Choose by itinerary: Chile-focused trip or Patagonian loop

Puerto Natales is the base for the park excursions and trekking programs. The three-day Ruta Chile excursion package also visits Perito Moreno across the Argentine border; it does not list hotel nights or airport transfers. Arrange those separately and allow time for border delays.

The cross-border day from El Calafate, as it really is

The operator lists the day at 16 hours, starting with an early hotel pickup in El Calafate. You clear Argentine exit and Chilean entry formalities at the border — passport mandatory — and the operator quotes a further 80 km of driving from the border into the park. The itinerary is panoramic: viewpoints over Lago Sarmiento and the Paine massif, the Salto del Río Paine waterfalls, and short walks rather than real hikes. A lunch box is included on the regular service, per the operator's listing.

Two costs sit outside the ticket. The Chilean park entrance is not included: the official CONAF rate for foreign adults is CLP 32,400 for a one-day pass, sold on the official platform pasesparques.cl, and the park asks visitors to buy at least 24 hours before entry. The other cost is the schedule itself: 16 hours door to door leaves no slack, and none of it is trail time at the towers — the Base of the Towers viewpoint is simply not part of this day.

Seasons change the calculation

Choose dates around the current park notices, operator calendars and weather. This catalog does not promise a dedicated winter Base Torres departure. The estancia horseback ride near Puerto Natales is a different activity, not a substitute mountain route; its dates must also be checked before booking.

Where to sleep: the three bases

Our where to stay guide compares the three realistic bases: Puerto Natales, inside the park, and El Calafate. The short version: sleep in Puerto Natales if you're taking tours — the operators on this site pick up in town, and you can string together different days without repacking. Sleeping inside the park puts you at the trailheads, but lodging on the trekking circuits must be booked in advance with the two authorized operators, and cancellation terms are strict.

El Calafate as a sleeping base for Torres del Paine only makes sense in the day-tour scenario above. If you catch yourself booking two separate Torres del Paine days from El Calafate, that's the signal to move: two nights in Puerto Natales will almost certainly serve you better than two border crossings.

The honest downsides

No Perito Moreno: if the glacier is on your list, you still need El Calafate or another border crossing.

It's a small working town — a place to sleep, eat and organize, not a destination in its own right.

"Closer" doesn't mean short days: the operators' own listings put full-day tours at 12 to 15 hours, with pickups as early as 06:15 for the Base of the Towers hike.

Winter limits what a Puerto Natales base can do: CONAF closed the W trail from 1 June to 31 July 2026 and the O circuit until 31 October 2026.

Basing in Chile doesn't remove the two-currency juggling if your itinerary crosses into Argentina anyway.

Do I need a passport for the day tour from El Calafate?

Yes. The tour crosses the Argentina–Chile border, so you clear immigration on both sides, in both directions. The operator asks you to bring your passport, plus a visa if your nationality requires one.

Is the park entrance fee included in the El Calafate day tour?
