Getting to Torres del Paine
Torres del Paine has no airport and no town inside it. Getting there is a chain: reach Patagonia, get to Puerto Natales — the small city that serves as the park’s base — then take a morning bus to one of the park entrances, with your entry ticket already bought online. Everything below comes from the operators’ own catalogues and the park’s official pages, with the date we read them. Where no official figure exists, we say so instead of borrowing one from a blog.
Flying in: what we can and cannot tell you
The two airports that matter are Punta Arenas (PUQ) and the small airfield at Puerto Natales (PNT). And here this site has to be honest rather than helpful-sounding: when we checked on 4 August 2026 we could not verify current routes, airlines or seasonal schedules for either airport from a primary source — the airline websites block automated checks and the official aeronautical pages were unreachable. So this page names no flight, no carrier and no airport-to-town distance.
One ground fact is verifiable instead: Bus-Sur’s official catalogues carry a “Conexión Aeropuerto PUQ” badge on their Punta Arenas services, but publish no operating details or prices for that connection, so we print none. Book the flight with the airline; plan everything after landing with the sections below, which all lead to the same place — Puerto Natales, the base town for the park.
- No airline names, no flight frequencies, no airport transfer fares. None of them could be read from a primary source on 4 August 2026, and a figure copied from a guidebook without a source is exactly the kind of number that strands somebody in Punta Arenas.
Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales by bus
The two cities are about 250 km apart on a paved road — CONAF’s park page says 250 km, Chile’s tourism board Sernatur says 248, so “about 250” is as precise as honesty allows. The bus is the standard way to cover it.
Bus-Sur’s 2026/27 high-season catalogue, checked on 19 September 2026, lists about 3 h 15 min and 11 daily departures in each direction between 07:00 and 21:00 from 14 September. Check your date before booking.
The catalogue lists semi cama at CLP 11,000 one way or CLP 20,000 return, and salón cama at CLP 14,000 one way. Departure and arrival terminals must match your ticket.
Buses Fernández has worked the same corridor for over 75 years and sells through the PasajeBus platform, but publishes no fares on its own site — so we quote none.
Coming from El Calafate: the international bus
Bus-Sur links Puerto Natales and El Calafate across the border. The 2026/27 catalogue lists about five hours and different operating days in each direction, with extra services from October. Use the dated timetable and your ticket for the exact departure; arrival times depend on customs, immigration, traffic and weather.
The 2026/27 catalogue lists CLP 40,000 one way in semi cama and CLP 50,000 in salón cama. At El Calafate’s terminal, the published municipal boarding tax is ARS 4,000, paid in cash and excluded from the ticket. Recheck the amount for your departure.
The route crosses the border at Paso Río Don Guillermo, by Villa Cerro Castillo — about 45 minutes out of Puerto Natales, according to Bus-Sur. Bring your passport, check whether your nationality needs a visa for either country, and keep the Tarjeta Única Migratoria that Chilean immigration issues on arrival: Bus-Sur’s own boarding checklist says that without documents in order you are not allowed on the bus.
Puerto Natales to the park gates
CONAF gives two road approaches from Puerto Natales: 150 km via Ruta 9 Norte, or 80 km via the Y-290 past Lago Porteño, arriving at one of three staffed entrances — Laguna Amarga, Lago Sarmiento and Río Serrano. The same CONAF page carries a warning worth taking literally: there are no fuel stations in or around the park.
Bus-Sur’s 2026/27 catalogue now includes the park timetable. The morning bus leaves Puerto Natales at 07:00 and reaches Laguna Amarga around 09:00 and Pudeto around 10:00. Additional outward and return services have October or November start dates, so use the catalogue table for your travel date and stop. Arrival times are estimates; allow room for connections.
The 2026/27 catalogue lists Puerto Natales–park fares of CLP 18,000 one way or CLP 35,000 return; for the Grey sector, CLP 30,000 and CLP 45,000. Transfers between park stops cost CLP 5,000 per leg, or CLP 10,000 for Grey. The separate Laguna Amarga–Welcome Center shuttle covers about 7 km in 25 minutes. Bus-Sur’s webpage currently gives conflicting one-way shuttle fares (CLP 4,500 and CLP 3,000) and says payment is in cash: confirm the fare before travelling. For the return, it asks passengers to be at the Welcome Center 30 minutes before their Bus-Sur departure.

The catamaran across Lago Pehoé
The western half of the W trek hinges on a boat. The Catamarán Lago Pehoé, run by Hielos Patagónicos, is the only link between Pudeto — a bus stop, not a village — and Paine Grande, and its own site (catamaranpehoe.com) is where the rules below come from.
The published fare is CLP 28,000 (USD 31) per person per leg. Children aged 10 and under travel free with a paying adult. Changing your date or time costs CLP 5,000; cancelling at least 72 hours ahead refunds CLP 23,000 of the CLP 28,000, and after that nothing is refunded. Check-in closes 15 minutes before departure.
Sailings follow the season, and the operator’s current tables deserve a close read: from 1 to 15 October 2026, two sailings from Pudeto, at 10:30 and 18:00; from 16 October 2026 to 15 April 2027, four, at 08:00, 10:30, 16:15 and 18:00; from 16 to 30 April 2027, two, at 10:30 and 17:30. In winter — May to August 2026 — the boat runs only on the 15th and 30th of each month, at 11:00, with booking and prepayment required.
- Sailings can be cancelled for weather. On a lake in one of the windiest corners of Patagonia that is not small print: leave slack in your plan, especially on the day you connect to a bus or a flight.
- The operator does not publish a crossing time, so neither do we — any minutes figure you read elsewhere is deduced from the timetable, not stated by the company.
The park ticket: buy it before the bus
Entry is a separate purchase from any transport, and it is not something to sort out at the gate that morning: the park’s official pages say tickets must be bought on pasesparques.cl, CONAF’s ticketing platform, at least 24 hours before you enter. Bus-Sur’s own 2026 flyers repeat the same instruction.
The 2026 rates for foreign visitors, in force since 1 May 2026, are CLP 32,400 for an adult day pass and CLP 48,500 for the “2 or more days” pass, valid for a continuous stay of up to 10 consecutive days; children aged 0–12 enter free. The platform takes payment in CLP, USD and other currencies.
Gate hours are seasonal, per the official ticketing platform: 07:00 to 21:00 from October to April, and a shorter 08:00 to 18:30 from May to September — with the standing caveat that hours can change for weather or safety. Plan around the timetable of the season you are actually travelling in, not the one in an old blog post.
