Where can you pitch a tent in Torres del Paine?
Pitch only within officially designated, authorized camping areas: arbitrary spots beside trails, viewpoints, lakes or refugios are not camping alternatives under CONAF’s park rules. Check opening status, reservations and site-specific instructions before travel; a campsite name on a map does not establish availability.
- Allowed: the authorized pitching area of an operating campsite, subject to its reservation and allocation rules.
- Not allowed: wild camping outside designated areas, according to official park guidance.
- Check first: whether your booking covers your own tent, supplied equipment or another accommodation type, and whether the route is open.
Park admission and camping reservations are separate. Admission is handled through Pases Parques; accommodation is booked with the relevant operator. Neither replaces the other.
Which designated campsites serve the W trek and O circuit?
Use the operator’s booking system to establish which campsites and accommodation products are available for your dates. The following comparison identifies route sectors and booking sources, not a guarantee that every site is operating.
Las Torres Patagonia sectors
Las Torres Patagonia, formerly Fantástico Sur, is the booking source for these eastern and connecting sectors:
- Central: the eastern access sector, useful when planning the Base Torres branch or the connection toward Serón.
- Chileno: on the Base Torres approach.
- Francés: on the connecting W route near the French Valley sector.
- Cuernos: on the connecting W route beneath Los Cuernos.
- Serón: on the eastern section of the O circuit beyond the main W route.
For every sector, check the named product rather than assuming that “camping” means an empty pitch. Confirm with Las Torres Patagonia whether you bring your own tent or receive a supplied tent, what bedding is included, and whether meals are compulsory or optional. Operational status is date-dependent: a sector listing is not confirmation of an available overnight stop.
Vértice sectors
Vértice Patagonia is the booking source for these western and northern sectors:
- Paine Grande: the western W junction serving the French Valley and Grey branches.
- Grey: on the western W branch and its connection with the O circuit.
- Dickson: on the northern O circuit, beyond the W route.
Confirm own-tent and supplied-tent products separately with Vértice, including equipment, bedding and meal arrangements. Do not infer an open campsite from the availability of another accommodation product.
Los Perros needs its own booking check. It is a planning candidate for the O circuit, but do not count it as a confirmed overnight stop without matching the operator’s current offer to official route information. Check Vértice and the park before building a pass-crossing itinerary around it.
What about beaches, viewpoints and land beside refugios?
Suitable-looking ground is not permission to camp: CONAF’s designated-site rule applies outside authorized areas, including trail margins, beaches, viewpoints, woodland and parking areas.
The same distinction applies beside a refugio: nearby land is not automatically part of its authorized campsite, under the park’s camping rules. Ask staff where your booked pitch actually is.
Italiano and Paso are ranger posts, not campsite alternatives on the CONAF map, according to CONAF’s park information. Old itineraries, abandoned tent platforms and another visitor’s tent are not evidence of permission.
Can you camp near road access points or sleep in a campervan?
Treat road-access camping and overnight vehicle parking as separate permissions from backpacking accommodation. A trekking campsite reservation does not establish that a vehicle can reach it or remain there overnight.
For any road-access property, ask its operator whether it accepts tents, campervans or both; whether overnight parking is expressly permitted; and which toilets, cooking areas and waste facilities are available. Confirm whether the property is inside or outside the park, using official park information and Chile Travel for location context.
Do not treat a daytime car park as an overnight campsite: camping authorization must follow park rules, not the mere presence of parking spaces. Outside accommodation also needs its own permission and booking. Our accommodation guide can help compare bases, but driving conditions and onward transport still need checking.
How do campsite reservations and park entry work together?
Build a complete overnight itinerary before relying on transport connections. The W requires accommodation bookings, and O planning must respect route restrictions, including the one-way Serón–Paso section, according to CONAF.
- Check official access requirements, route notices and seasonal restrictions.
- Confirm every intended overnight stop with its operator.
- Read exactly what each booking includes: pitch, tent, bedding, meals and transfers are different products.
- Arrange admission through Pases Parques and coordinate transport around the confirmed itinerary.
- Keep booking confirmations available and register at every ranger station, as required by CONAF.
Avoid paying for disconnected nights that cannot form a permitted route. For help comparing supported itineraries, see our guided W trek comparison. Current starting prices appear on those tour pages.
What rules apply to tents, cooking, fires and waste?
Camping permission does not make every part of a campsite a cooking area. Open fires are prohibited, and camp stoves are restricted to designated areas under official park rules.
- Pitching: use the area assigned by campsite staff; check platform arrangements and suitable anchoring equipment with Las Torres Patagonia or Vértice.
- Cooking: identify the authorized cooking location before unpacking a stove; do not assume your pitch qualifies under park rules.
- Fuel and equipment: ask your operator which stove types it accepts and what equipment, if any, is available. Do not depend on local rental or fuel supplies without confirmation.
- Toilets and waste: ask staff which facilities and disposal arrangements apply. Plan to carry out rubbish rather than assuming every stop accepts it.
- Water: confirm the source and any treatment advice locally; do not assume every campsite provides treated drinking water.
Operator instructions add site-specific detail; they do not replace park-wide restrictions.
How should weather and closures affect your camping plan?
Wind, rain, cold and operational changes can overturn a booked itinerary. The park’s weather guidance advises preparation for rain, wind or snow in any month. Bring suitable layers and a tent appropriate for exposed conditions.
The O circuit is closed from May until 31 October 2026 under the CONAF closure notice; the end of that stated period is not a guarantee of reopening.
Check park notices, operator messages and forecasts from the Dirección Meteorológica de Chile before departure. A Puerto Natales forecast is not campsite-specific evidence. Allow for cancelled sailings and disrupted road connections without assuming a spare camping night will be available.
What if a campsite is full or your itinerary changes?
A full campsite or missed connection does not authorize wild camping, under CONAF’s camping rules. Contact the operator and seek ranger guidance before continuing toward an unconfirmed overnight stop.
Alternatives to investigate include changing dates, rearranging the whole sequence, using authorized accommodation or choosing day hikes. None guarantees availability or a feasible same-day exit. For an emergency, follow the park’s current emergency procedures and ranger instructions rather than improvising a route.

What else should you know before camping?
Permission, reservations and equipment are separate checks. These answers address the most common misunderstandings.
Is wild camping allowed, including beside refugios?
No. Use authorized camping areas only; land beside a refugio is not automatically included, under official park rules.
Can you bring your own tent?
Confirm the specific booking product first. Ask Las Torres Patagonia or Vértice whether your chosen campsite and dates accept an own-tent reservation, rather than assuming supplied equipment and pitches are interchangeable.
Does park entry include camping?
No. Admission through Pases Parques is separate from accommodation booked with campsite operators; check meals, equipment and transfers individually.
Can you sleep overnight in a campervan?
Do not assume so. Confirm overnight permission for the exact location with the property operator and consult official park guidance; daytime parking is not proof of camping authorization.
What happens if your reserved campsite closes?
Contact the operator and park staff for an authorized alternative. Check the applicable booking terms with Las Torres Patagonia or Vértice; a closure does not itself authorize camping elsewhere under CONAF rules.

Use park authorities for permissions and operators for the exact accommodation you are buying. These sources serve different purposes:
- CONAF: park regulations, route maps, ranger posts, seasonal restrictions and closure notices.
- Official Torres del Paine park website: visitor guidance, access information, safety advice and park notices.
- Pases Parques: admission products and entry-purchase requirements, not campsite reservations.
- Las Torres Patagonia: eastern-sector accommodation products, inclusions, availability and booking terms.
- Vértice Patagonia: western and northern accommodation information, camping products and booking terms.
- Dirección Meteorológica de Chile: official forecasts and station observations; station data should not be presented as measurements from a campsite.
- Chile Travel: destination and access context, not a substitute for campsite permission or operator confirmation.
